American Bulldog Breeders

Conscientious American Bulldog Breeders take great care that their dogs go into right homes and do not fall into wrong hands, because these dogs are not for everyone. Having such a powerful dog in possession requires a great deal of responsibility and character. Because the dog descended from a ferocious butcher dog, care must be taken that this viciousness does not surface in the process of interaction. American Bulldogs are large working dogs requiring specific training and socialization methods.

The American Bulldog is very different from its today’s English cousin. He is much larger, has longer legs and is much more enduring. Unlike the English Bulldog, who has been bred down to pet status, the American Bulldog retains his working qualities and can be used in various competitions and services. There are two types of American Bulldogs: the Johnson type (Classic) and the Scott type (Performance). They were named after American Bulldog breeders who developed them – John D. Johnson and Allen Scott.

The American Bulldog resembles the now outlawed Pit Bull Terrier, and many dog fanciers have taken a liking to him as a substitute for the lost breed. More often than not, he is mistaken for the Pitbull, but the Bulldog has a stockier and more quadrangular head, compared to the wedge-shaped head of a Pitbull type dog. In their dogs, American Bulldog Breeders strove (and not without success) to preserve the appearance of the Old English Bulldogge, the ancestor of all Mastiff-type dogs of today.

Today, American Bulldogs are robust and powerful dogs, with a short coat that comes in various color patterns: solid white, white with patches of brown, brindle, fawn, red and so forth. Actually, any color combination is acceptable, but the presence of at least some white is a must. Johnson type Bulldogs are somewhat larger than Scott-type dogs, and they have a shorter muzzle. It is not uncommon for American Bulldog breeders to interbreed these two types of Bulldog, so the discrepancy is now rather blurred.

American Bulldogs are not as aggressive as they are thought to be sometimes. They are quite friendly, easy-going and loyal to their loved ones and their friends. They can be aloof with strangers, but once a good relationship between the master and the person in question is established, reconciliation is the only alternative. These dogs are good with children, but should not be left around them unattended, because such a strong and energetic dog may hurt a small kid unintentionally. American Bulldogs need a lot of mental and physical stimulation, and there always must be a job to do for your Bulldog. Before selling puppies, good American Bulldog Breeders consult future owners on various important aspects and points concerning Bulldog breeding, weaning, training and handling.
