American Bulldog Picture

If you take a look at an American Bulldog Picture and that of an Old English Bulldog (now extinct), you will see a striking similarity, leaving no doubt about the evident genetic kinship between these two species. Some specialists believe that the modern Bulldog is a direct descendant of the Old English Bulldog. Others consider the Bulldog to be a result of selective breeding aimed at replicating at least a similar-looking version of the Old English Bulldog. The American Bulldog is much more like the Old English Bulldog than the modern English Bulldog, which is today more of a lap dog than of a guard dog.

American Bulldogs of today are divided into two main types: the classic Johnson type, created by John D. Johnson, and the Scott type (performance type). Major attempts to revitalize the Old Bulldog took place in the mid-1900s, when John D. Johnson and then Alan Scott, both having a clear and detailed American Bulldog Picture in their minds, traveled around US farmlands in search for dogs they believed would be worthwhile as breeding stock for the breed. Eventually, the two breeders went separate ways, which resulted in the appearance of the two lines.

American Bulldogs have inherited most features intrinsic to the Old English Bulldog. They are adept at guarding property, livestock, and can be used as vermin controllers. American Bulldogs have strong and robust bodies, featuring muscular limbs, deep chests and stocky, somewhat box-shaped heads. The coat comes in pure white or various combinations of white with spots of red, brindle, fawn, black, gray and other colors. It is imperative that an American Bulldog’s coat has a certain amount of white. The coat is short and close-lying, and it does not require much grooming. Dog breed sites contain lots of American Bulldog Pictures and bits of information for dog lovers, breeders and novice dog owners.

As to the dog’s temperament, American Bulldogs are as protective around their loved ones and property as were their fathers. They are also capable of guarding and holding cattle, and can be used for hunting large ungulates. American Bulldogs are known to have been used in hunting wild pig, which was once a sheer nuisance to farmers in America. American Bulldogs are great family companions, and they can be suspicious of strangers. They do not like it when there is no one around, as they appreciate company and interaction. Well socialized dogs can tolerate other pets, but not infrequently, they practice their hunting aptitudes on smaller animals. Generally good with children, they should not be left around them unsupervised, because they cannot calculate their own strength and may accidentally hurt a child. If you would like to receive a broader notion of the dog, you can visit some American Bulldog Picture sites and read a lot of interesting information about their past and present.
