American Bulldog Puppy for Sale

If you have decided you have found a good breeder with a good American Bulldog puppy for sale, think twice before accepting the deal and make sure the breeder and the puppy are really good. If you have only superficial knowledge about what makes a good breeder and the breed itself, you will need a professional advice in order to reduce the risk of disappointment. Unfortunately, not all Bulldog breeders are as decent and conscientious as they present themselves. There are lots of so called “puppy mills”, who breed for quantity and profit, giving little thought to the quality of their puppies.

One thing you should know about the American Bulldog is that there are two types of them – the Johnson and the Scott type. These dogs are hugely reminiscent of the Old English Bulldog, which used to be involved in bull baiting contests. They also took part in dog fighting contests. With the abolition of bull baiting in England in 1835, the breed lost its designation and lapsed into oblivion. Breeders in England strove to develop a small house dog with some physical characteristics of the Old English Bulldog intact. The modern English Bulldog is much smaller in size than its predecessor and is no longer fit for a tough physical action. American Bulldogs are more like the Old English Bulldog, as breeders focused mainly on preserving and revitalizing the progenitor of the many of its today’s sons. If you think you have picked out the right American Bulldog puppy for sale to be your companion, please, make sure you are buying from a trustworthy breeder.

Unlike the modern English or French Bulldog, the American Bulldog is still a working breed. It was first registered as the American Pit Bulldog in 1970, but later was renamed to avoid confusion with the Pit Bull Terrier. Initially, American Bulldogs were subdivided into various bloodlines according to the region where they were bred (Southern White Hill Bulldog, Country Bulldog etc). It was not until John D. Johnson and Allan Scott started a breeding project to create the universal American Bulldog. John and Allan cooperated for a while, but eventually they split up, each starting his own breeding program, which resulted in the two American Bulldog types. Johnson type Bulldogs (the Bully/Classic type) are sturdier and heavier, and Scott type Bulldogs (the Standard/Performance type) are more slender. When studying American Bulldog puppies for sale, you must be one hundred percent sure about the strain you prefer.

American Bulldogs of today measure 20-28 inches tall at the withers, and they weigh about 60-120lbs. They have a short coat that comes in different color patterns. It is mandatory that American Bulldogs have some white (or pure white), combined with brindle, fawn, tan, red, black and so forth. American Bulldogs resemble the American Pit Bull Terrier, but the Bulldog’s muzzle has a different shape. American Bulldogs make excellent guard dogs, because they are naturally protective around their owners and property. However, they are not vicious and bond with trustworthy people easily. Good Bulldog breeders do not deal in more than one or two breeds and do not have scores of American Bulldog puppies for sale packed in numerous backyard cages, because they work for the betterment of the breed, not for their own well-being.
