American Bulldogs - Choosing a Reputable Breeder
To make the process of choosing breeders of American Bulldogs a little bit easier, ask them a series of questions. There are some rules, which an American Bulldog breeder should never violate. First of all, the sire should not be younger than 2 years old. As for the dam, make sure that it is more than 20 months old by the time of the first breeding. A responsible breeder does not breed the dam more than twice annually.

Ask for written proof of vaccinations. Experienced, knowledgeable breeders know that by the age of 16-20 weeks puppies run out of maternal antibodies and it is hard for them to resist diseases without any support. Find out these issues and decide if the breeder is really capable of producing healthy, well-balanced American Bulldogs.
Special attention should be paid to health certificates of the parent dogs. American Bulldogs are prone to hip dysplasia. Therefore, both parent dogs should have OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) certificates. The dogs are tested at the age of two years old. It is also wise to ask breeders on the issue of demodectic mange. Some bloodlines are known for being susceptible to this disorder. If you are a novice to the breed, ask for advise on care. Well cared for, American Bulldogs live up to 10 years on the average.
