However, not every dog can take part in the trial. To be eligible for Irondog, an American Bulldog should have a protection sport title. Irondog also allows American Bulldogs that do not have the title, to start their "carrier" with participating in Triathlon/Pentathlon. Owners have a choice to make between such events as Weight Pulling, Sprint Race, Tug of War, Hangtime, Hardest Hitting, and Endurance Test. The dog should successfully perform in five stages of Triathlon/Pentathlon to prove its perfect working qualities.

Irondog is the sport that determines strength and endurance of American Bulldogs. No dog will be allowed to exercise its abilities on the public unless it has passed the Guard Dog Temperament Test (GDT). This test consists of two stages and is a good exam for American Bulldogs. The first stage evaluates the dog's temperament and ability to follow the commands of the handler. American Bulldogs are expected to be loyal to strangers and react adequately to various stimuli. The second stage is aimed at evaluating protective abilities of American Bulldogs that are so valued by the adherents of the breed.
